Plastic – For Or Against?
Have you ever payed attention to how many items in our household are made of plastic? Plastic bags, plastic containers, bottles, CDs, even chairs and toys. What a paradise our world is to a plastics part manufacturer — plastic stuff is everywhere!
But as scientists claim, not every kind of plastic is safe to use. Of course, if your son keeps a baseball with the signature of his favorite player in sports display cases on a shelf, it will do him no harm. But on the other hand, babies are keen to put everything into their mouths — this can obviously be dangerous.
Never forget to check if the item used in food containers or in toys dedicated for small children does not consist of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The chemical used for producing this type of plastic can cause cancer. But this is not a reason to take away all of your child’s favorite toys. The US government has long ago banned the usage of those toxic elements in toy manufacturing.
So, practically speaking, plastic is not something to avoid. Rather, avoiding it is impossible. The only thing you really should not do is burn any kind of plastic and spend a couple of hours close by the smoke. Believe me that would not be a brilliant idea. Generally, in most cases plastic for everyday use is harmless.
It goes without saying that you shouldn’t be scared of buying plastic things–for example plastic toy cars or barbie doll collections — for your kids to play with. There’s no chance of toys produced in the US (assuming you can find any) containing toxic elements. But be alert for toys produced in other countries, like China. The danger connected with Chinese-manufactured toys has been reported in the press lately. Just read the label of the packaging carefully to make sure the toy you want to buy is safe.
