Space, Light And A Chair

Space, Light And A ChairYesterday, I ran into a photo of a chair designed by a group of Japanese designers. This thinnest chair in the world, made of steel, was presented at Milan Design Week 2010.

To tell the truth, I became enchanted by this chair. It created a feeling of freedom and space. The moment I saw it, minimalistic home interior ideas started circling in my head.

Space and light–this is what creates a minimalist interior.

Imagine yourself in a wide, almost empty room with white walls and large windows, from which light flows inside. This is a place where you can relax, remain on your own, absorb yourself into your inner world.

How do you create minimalist interior design?

  • First, forget about bright colors, complicated shapes and elements. Everything should be simple and unnoticeable. Things should be soft and create an atmosphere that will make you forget about where you are and what surrounds you. No suppressing shapes, no ornateness–only wide sunlit space, in which you can breathe freely.
  • The windows should be large, because light is the main decor element in your room. Find light curtain lace, which will fall down freely and dance in the wind when you open the windows.
  • Even a small room can look endless if you decorate it the right way. The walls, ceiling and floor should be white. Get rid of unneeded furniture. What do you need to feel comfortable? Just a place to sit, and maybe a small table.
  • Instead of a sofa and armchairs, consider big white cushions to sit on. And find a low table that will not attract much attention. If you can’t do without storage rooms, find modern closets with white doors, which are practically invisible against the background of the walls. I guess that’s all you will need in a room which is designed for resting.

Completely white and practically empty rooms might seem strange to some people, but only to those who don’t understand the magic of these kinds of rooms.

In our everyday life the surrounding world sometimes seems to suppress us. High gray buildings, small overcrowded offices and stressful events influence us and make us feel trapped. And wide, sunlit open spaces give us a feeling of freedom.

White, especially when light falls on it, helps against depression and bad mood. Try it on yourself. When you feel sad, take a white sheet of paper, and make light fall on it. Look at that sheet for a while, and soon you’ll feel much calmer and happier. That’s why I advise you to have a white sunlit room. It will always give you a feeling of peace.

And don’t forget about the fascinating Japanese chair. You can place it in front of the window, look at the sky and meditate. Or just use it as a piece of art.
