CCTV Systems Always Watching You
With the growth of security systems, new achievements in this range don’t seem to surprise anymore: new types of cameras with more advanced features and possibilities. Recent developments are proof that technological improvements are getting more and more promising.
One result of those improvements is the CCTV camera. CCTV is an abbreviation for Closed Circuit Television, that is to say, a television interconnected system used by only a limited number of viewers, as opposed to broadcast television. The widest application of CCTV cameras is in the security industry, where it is mainly used to provide continuous monitoring.
The first CCTV cameras used in public places were low-definition black and white CCTV systems, without zooming capabilities. Later on, as their application increased having already been used in special government facilities and banks, CCTV systems continued developing.
Yet, in spite of wide use, the most important effect of the CCTV camera is not its crime prevention ability, as according to some statistics, only 3% of crimes are solved by CCTV. Meanwhile, CCTV cameras are very helpful in investigations and prosecutions of crimes, murders or robberies. In many countries, CCTV is also used to target anti-social behavior, like in UK, where local authority CCTV works with police to fight against the behavior of drunk people or other anti-social movements. Also, CCTV cameras are very common in traffic monitoring, because it requires permanent control. For instance, in a subway train, a CCTV camera may allow the operator to make sure that doors close safely without harming people. In amusement parks ride operators can survey that people are not in danger.
The development of technology gave birth to “talking CCTV systems.” This system is a CCTV surveillance camera equipped with a speaker, which allows a security operator to speak to the ones who work at the CCTV monitoring site. This type of CCTV camera was used in Wiltshire, UK for the first time in 2003. It is aimed not only at catching criminals, but also allows operators of CCTV cameras to order criminals to stop what they are doing.
With all this information, I sometimes have the feeling that one day technological development will create such miracles as, for example, stopping any crime or even anti-social behavior. Sounds very optimistic, moreover unrealistic, but dreaming is always worthwhile.
